Data restore with Puppy Linux

As any IT person would know you become the helpdesk support for any Family or Friends. That have any sort of computer problems. This week i was given three dead computers to fix. Of course they all contained precious family photos which hadn’t been backed up and were therefore critical to recover.
The first machine was an eeePC and was actually a piece of cake as a quick web search showed that you could press F9 to access a recovery partition and restore the unit. Easy. The othe two are windows desktops, running xp and both are showing non system disk errors on startup. I decided to try something a bit different so I dowloaded Puppy Linux and made a boot disk. This linux is so small it’ll run in Ram. It booted fine and runs quite snappily, all hardware recognised including the wireless which took a lot of mucking around to get working under xp! I copied the files off onto a usb hard disk and the job was done. Nice one puppy.
